Skincare routine for acne-prone skin that actually calms breakouts

Acne-prone skin has been trained to expect punishment. Scrubs, alcohol-based astringents, spot treatments that leave the skin peeling. Almost every popular acne product on the market makes the underlying condition worse over time. The routine that actually clears skin is gentler, more consistent, and takes patience. Here is what works.

What causes acne

Acne is caused by a combination of excess sebum, dead skin cells that block pores, C. acnes bacteria that thrive in blocked follicles, and inflammation. Hormones drive all four in the background. Nothing you put on your face changes hormones, but the right actives address the other three drivers.

The barrier-first approach

A compromised barrier makes acne worse. Every stripping cleanser, every over-exfoliation session, every abrasive scrub triggers more inflammation and more oil production. The first job of any acne routine is to protect the barrier.

That means gentle cleansing, hydration, and no more than one exfoliating active on rotation at a time.

The core actives

Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, dissolves inside pores. Use it two to three times a week, not daily.

Retinol regulates cellular turnover, prevents pore blockage, and reduces post-blemish marks over time. This is the single most important long-term acne active.

Niacinamide at 4 to 5 percent calms redness and regulates sebum.

Azelaic acid at 10 percent is excellent for both acne and post-blemish pigmentation.

The morning routine

Gentle gel cleanser.

Vitamin C serum. Antioxidant protection and fading of post-blemish marks.

Hyaluronic acid on damp skin.

Light non-comedogenic moisturiser.

Broad-spectrum SPF, gel or hybrid formula.

The evening routine

Oil cleanse followed by gentle gel cleanser.

On non-treatment nights: hyaluronic acid, moisturiser.

On treatment nights, alternate: salicylic acid two nights a week, retinol two to three nights a week. Never on the same night.

Always finish with a light moisturiser.

Spot treatment done right

Benzoyl peroxide at 2.5 to 5 percent as a targeted spot treatment, not an all-over layer. Higher concentrations do not work better and cause more irritation. Apply only to the spot itself, wait until dry, then continue with your normal routine.

The lifestyle factors that matter

Change pillowcases twice a week.

Wipe down your phone screen daily.

Do not touch or pick at active blemishes. Picking is the single biggest cause of scarring.

Diet impact varies. Some people see a clear connection with high-glycaemic foods and dairy, others do not. Keep a two-week diary if you suspect a trigger.

When to see a dermatologist

Cystic acne, painful nodules under the skin, scarring or acne that does not respond to twelve weeks of a consistent routine all warrant a dermatologist visit. Prescription-strength retinoids, oral medication and in-clinic treatments can make an enormous difference.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

Can I use retinol if I have active acne?

Yes, and it is one of the most effective long-term treatments. Introduce it slowly and expect a possible purge in the first four to six weeks.

Should I skip moisturiser if I have oily, acne-prone skin?

No. Skipping moisturiser dehydrates the skin and drives more oil production. Use a light, non-comedogenic gel moisturiser.

How long until an acne routine works?

Twelve weeks is a fair test. Some people see improvement earlier, but the skin cycle needs a full quarter to reflect what a new routine is doing.
